CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The University of the Western Cape Law Department is pleased to invite students to apply to participate in an upcoming Animal Law Moot Court examining legal issues related to the commercial captive predator industry.

This moot court will explore the regulation, governance, and ethical challenges surrounding industries involving captive predators, including questions of animal welfare, conservation, administrative law, and constitutional principles. Through legal argument and judicial deliberation, students will gain insight into how the law engages with contested forms of wildlife use and protection.

The moot court will be overseen by legal experts with experience in animal law, environmental law, and public interest litigation, offering students a valuable opportunity to observe advocacy in practice and engage with a rapidly developing area of law.

Date: 17-18 September 2026
Venue: Law Department, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town

All law students in South Africa are encouraged to apply. This event will be of particular interest to those curious about animal law, environmental justice, constitutional litigation, and the role of law in regulating human–animal relationships. This is an in-person event and successful applicants will need to organise travel costs to attend.
