I, the undersigned, hereby add my name to the Letter and my voice to the global call to ban live wildlife markets around the world.
The COVID-19 outbreak is believed to have originated at wildlife markets in China, where the deplorable and unhygienic conditions and the close proximity between humans and animals provide the perfect opportunity for zoonotic diseases to spread.
In the midst of this global pandemic, I join the call upon the World Health Organisation (WHO) to:
1. Publicly and explicitly state the proven link between these live wildlife markets and serious threats to human health;
2. Recommend that governments worldwide permanently ban live wildlife markets and the use of wildlife in traditional medicine, as these pose a serious risk to human health globally;
3. Support and encourage initiatives that offer alternative sources of protein to safeguard food security, while protecting wildlife and reducing the risk to human health.
To signify Youth Month 2020, Blood Lions and YouthForLions asked you to sign a letter that will be sent to the Ministers and Deputy Ministers of the South African Government urging them to set a zero CITES lion bone export quota in support for the global call to ban live wildlife markets, as well as the use of wildlife products for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
We are calling on the South African Government to collaborate on an interdepartmental level to work towards phasing out the captive breeding of lions and other big cats and restoring our world-renowned conservation and tourism reputations.
We are extremely proud to announce that the letter has been signed by 622 people.
THANK YOU to each and every one of you who signed this #BanWildlifeMarkets Pledge and added your signature to the letter.
