Is rewilding of lions an option?

The panel of experts seriously considered the possibility of rewilding captive-bred lions, as this is more socially acceptable than, for example, euthanasia or trade out, but they found a number of risks that would be difficult to mitigate. Hence, rewilding of captive-bred lions was not considered a viable option. Some of the reasons include:

National PAIA paper, Captive predators, Lions in captivity , lion farm , wildlife tourism, Blood lions, predators in captivity, canned hunting, animal welfare, commercial captive lion industry, ban canned hunting, illegal wildlife trade, born to live wild #Cancelcaptivity

“The priority for lion conservation should be on managing the wild and wild-managed lions, and the limited conservation resources and space should not be diverted to the rewilding of captive and captive-bred lions”, the panel states.
